Tree of Character

Your character is defined by what you do,
not what you say or what you believe in.

Prominently located in the Great Room, our Tree of Character is used to guide many discussions. The words on our tree represent the principles that guide people of character who will be self-fulfilled and an asset to others in their life.

RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, SELF-DISCIPLINE, CURIOSITY, HONESTY, COOPERATION, PERSEVERENCE, INTEGRITY, COURAGE, CONCERN

As a group, we define these words and discuss ways they are relevant to our lives and experiences. We refer to these words frequently when discussing literature, current events, and when something happens that leads to a teachable moment. Children and staff notice when others have acted in accord with one of these principles, and acknowledge the behavior by describing the action on a slip that is placed in our “Compliment Jar." Periodically we draw slips from the jar, discuss them as a group and hang them on the tree. Using the Tree of Character helps the children become comfortable with giving compliments and builds their respect and appreciation for others.
