Community Service

In keeping with our school's motto, "We take care of ourselves, each other, our school, and our community," our students participate in a number of community service projects throughout the year. In recent years our community service projects have included: giving gifts of artwork or Halloween “treats” and performing for the senior residents at area nursing homes, collecting blankets for Saratoga Racetrack backstretch workers, bringing gifts to patients at Saratoga Hospital at holiday time, participating in Jump Rope for Heart to raise money for the American Heart Association, and putting together school kits for children who were affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Another way in which the students work to support children beyond the school community is through the ROAR (Reach Out and Read) program. This program encourages each student to reach a personal reading goal for the year, while at the same time earning “pennies” toward purchasing books for children in need. Children have several opportunities during the week to engage in ROAR reading at school, however a great deal of the reading occurs at home as well.

Each year the students select a local not-for-profit organization that will receive the ROAR gift, and at the end of the year the students make a contribution of books based on the number of pages they have read. The funds for these books come from contributions by parents, relatives, friends and community members. Past recipients include the Double H Ranch, Saratoga Hospital, Center for the Family, the Franklin Community Center, and the Quest for Grace Foundation.
